The Assault On Voting Rights By The Conservative Right And The Republican Party

Since 2011 over two dozen states have passed strict voter ID laws. Primarily these laws are in states with Republican led Legislatures/Governorships. The false rationale is that these laws are needed to stop 'voter fraud'. Numerous studies have in fact shown that voter fraud (imposter voting) is almost non-existent in the United States. That is the truth. So what is the real reasoning behind these laws?

The Voter ID movement has grown significantly since President Obama was elected President. These laws are the result of false fears. As we have stated before, much of what happens in United States politics involves White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. That particular group has been in control of American government since the founding of the Republic. We are however experiencing a sea-change of demographics. The Hispanic and Black population has grown while the White population has not. Add the openly gay voting bloc and the increasing power of women who make up a large percentage of voters. All of these groups tend to vote Democratic. By 2043 whites will no longer be the majority. Some believe sooner.

As stated these groups are more likely to vote moderately or progressively, creating a grave political dilemna for the Republicans and the Conservative Right. Not for much longer will they be able to maintain power in any significant numbers. There are things that they could do to improve their prospects. Such as taking a new direction on important issues such as contraception/abortion, immigration and healthcare. But instead they have chosen the path of attempting to suppress the vote. Voter ID Laws disproportionately affect the poor, minorities, students and women. These laws hearken back to the days of Jim Crow, before poll taxes were outlawed. These laws are meant to maintain the political power of the WASP Demographic by any means necessary. They violate the spirit of our Founders intent. Maybe at our founding blacks nor women were allowed to vote, but since then those issues have been long resolved.  The Right is fighting a battle which in the end is already lost, they just can't accept it. These laws are an abomination. Some have unfortunately been upheld, but others have been cast down. The Democrats have been fighting back against the assault on its voters.

The Justice Department has filed lawsuits in some cases attempting to stop laws with onerous voting requirements. In a big victory for voters rights a court has struck down the Pennsylvania Voter ID Law as unconstitutional. This law has previously been highlighted on this blog as the leader of the Pennsylvania Legislature made it clear in 2012 that it was meant to ensure a Romney victory, not combat fraud which failed miserably.

The new legislation being proposed by a bipartisan group of Senators after much liberal pressure may help correct the Voting ID Law issue. Also there are citizen's groups fighting to maintain voting rights for all Americans.

What type of people want to suppress the voting rights of their fellow Americans and use bogus issues of fraud to attempt it? Let's take a look. One in particular came into stark display as their viewpoint is so fanatical, unreasonable and extreme. His name is Bryan Fischer and he will be our example.

Bryan Fischer is part of an organization called the American Family Association. They are a group of fanatical zealots who hold extreme positions on numerous subjects. Included are gay rights, women's contraceptive/privacy rights, voting rights, immigration and other hot button issues. They are on the watch list of several groups that track such extremism.

The group has a long history of hate and intolerance. Bryan Fischer is one of their most public faces and vocal voices. He is widely listened to on American Family Radio and authors a newspaper column. Some of his beliefs can be looked at below.

One of Fischer's most insane ideas concerns voting. His thought process hearkens back to an earlier time long and better off forgotten. You see Fischer believes only property owners should vote. Yes you just read me right.

Fischer's primeval belief system is almost laughable. I say almost because it is sad beyond words that he has so many adherents who believe as he does. Enough to affect politics in this nation and at least for the present keep some of the troglodytes in power. If those of us who are enlightened thought our nation was beyond this type of intolerance and prejudice we were grievously mistaken. Just the idea that only property owners should vote is a type of bigotry. The bigotry of elitism.

Fischer defends Phil Robertson as well, their two hearts are akin along with the other members of the AFA. Just as with Robertson we can not continue to excuse or tolerate Fischer's intolerance. Again we will hear the persecutors whine that they are being persecuted. Not the truth of course but the accusers must have a way to delude themselves.

Fischer, Robertson and the AFA show us that the United States still has a long ways to go before we are truly a egalitarian, enlightened society.

So once again we post because the hate of Bryan Fischer must not be anonymous or left unanswered. Who he is and where he resides should be known to all who live in his community.
